#BoTB Results for Big Yellow Taxi: Joni or the Crows?

Well, well. I didn't expect such a wide margin. Really? 1:2? (Or is it 2:1?) Joni Mitchell, indisputable winner of this battle. (Which, by the way, I'm sure Counting Crows would concede. They'd be totally cool with it.)

Final tally, just to rub it in:

Joni: 12
Debbie
FAE
Stephen
Janie
Elliptical Man
Mike
Susan
Robin
Denise
Jeffrey
John
Michele

Counting Crows: 6
Yolanda
Lee
Birgit
Cherdo
Carol
Cathy

Thanks, y'all, for the visits and the votes, and above all for taking the time to elucidate and dissect your reasoning on what is for most people essentially a gut choice. You rock!

See you on the 15th!

  1. Yeah, I think that margin seems about right and was predictable. It's really tough for a cover to beat an original when the original is very well known. A basically unknown original against a cover (especially a cover where the band was/is popular) is probably an equal playing ground. But the Name Brand / Familiar Tune generally has a large head start.

I'm able to listen to both songs as if I'm hearing them for the first time (regardless of how many times I've heard one or the other), but I don't think everyone can do that. Or even always tries to do it. I try to give both performers a fair chance right out of the starting gate.

    1. No, you're right, Stephen -- it's hard to put aside the history we have with a song for an objective comparison. Music reaches us in such a visceral way, doesn't it? I'm learning so much from these battles... About perception, about perspective, about opinions, about how we make up our minds, about what influences us. I love it :) Thanks for popping in to check results!

  2. I love Joni, but I still think the Crows did it better. :)

    1. I'm with you, Yolanda. (Apparently we're in the minority -- we're rebels, hehe ;) ) Thanks for coming back to check the final tally!

  3. Sorry it didn't work out the way you had hoped, Guilie. In my case, it's probably a nostalgia/age thing. ☺ Although I was willing to give Counting Crows a chance, their version didn't arouse any emotional response, and that is my yardstick.

    1. Debbie, you're so right... Music provokes strong emotions (well, some of it does), and that's a great yardstick to judge by. I do *not* envy people that hand out awards for music (say the Grammys or something) -- I could never be that objective. Something either speaks to you or doesn't, and some things just speak louder :) Thanks for checking back!

  4. Oh I had a feeling since she blazed the trail with this song but I did enjoy The Crows better

  5. Many of us grew up listening to Joni. I'm not surprised that Cherdo and Birgit are with the minority. Tho
se two always have to be different. That's why I love them.

    Love,
    Janie

  6. Hmmm, I had no clue as to how this would go. Like you said, it's a gut decision on who one votes for more or less. At least that's the way it is for me. :) Thanks for revealing the winner. I'll see you on the 15th, if not before. ;)
